Dr. Professor BALDE Aliou Mamadou

Head of the Pharmacognosy-Ethnopharmacology-Traditional Medicine Chair

Guinea

I’m a Pharmacist, 68 years old. My academic evolution was realized at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Conakry, Guinea (1968-1973), the Institute of Pharmacy, Free University of Brussels, Belgium (1983-1986), the Tropical Medicine Institute of Antwerp, Belgium (1985-1987), the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Antwerp, Belgium (1986-1991). I’ve got my PharmD in 1973, my PhD (pharmacognosy) in 1990 from the University of Antwep, my pharmacognosy “aggregation” in 1996 from the “Conseil Africain et Malgache de l’Enseignement Supérieur (CAMES, a pan-african French Academic Institution) and my full title as Professor in 2006 from CAMES. Since 1973, my efforts were focused on ethnopharmacological investigations which allowed a collection of a numerous plant species widely used in the Guinean traditional medicine. Most of these were submitted for in vitro or in vivo biological surveys. Ethnotherapeutical evaluations of some remedies were done under the auspice of the traditional owners. The most promised were submitted to a randomized clinical trial (malaria, essential hypertension, type 2 diabetes, schistosomiasis...). Bio-assay guided fractionation led to the isolation and identification of some efficient components belonging to alkaloids, terpenoids, polyphenolics…. The tolerancy of some of these plants were confirmed through toxicological surveys and their traditional pharmaceutical forms were improved and clinically re-evaluated. I’m contributing to the education and sensibilisation of the traditional healers in the management of diseases and remedies. I’m teaching pharmacognosy, ethnopharmacology and phytochemistry to students of pharmacy, biology and chemistry. I succeed to implement a Master of medicinal plants and ethnopharmaology since 2005. I’ve been the chief of the department of pharmacy (University of Conakry) from 1998 to 2010 and I’m the General Manager of the National Research and Valorisation Center on Medicinal Plants of Dubreka since 2000.  In order to value some of my research results, I created AMB-Pharma, a private structure dedicated to production of phytomedicines and food supplements. I am the holder of three (3) international patents relating to essential arterial hypertension, type 2 diabetes and HIV/Aids. I have participated in more than hundred national and International congresses and published more than 70 articles in reading Committee journals. I aimed to contribute in improving the health population through a rational use of the Guinean pharmacopea and traditional medicine.
